What I learned this week:
Holy heck I hate WordPress. Nobody likes WordPress. Screw WordPress. I promise I’ll talk about something productive but I have to express my distaste for something first.
I’m building a test course for a client using LearnDash, a WordPress plugin that lets you make online courses hosted directly on your WordPress website. I swear almost every plugin I’ve used for WordPress is a nightmare because the structure of the dashboard is so unintuitive. Yet, I will admit, it has everything you need if you’re patient enough to learn it.
If you’re going to build a website, start with Wix. Work up to Webflow if you need more advanced functionality and better SEO. Webflow has Webflow University, which is essentially the best dang documentation on how to use a product I’ve ever seen.
Plus, Wix and Webflow are free to use. Give them a whirl. I will say though, there’s a learning curve to Webflow, whereas Wix is stupidly easy to use.
Okay, now that the website rant is done, I had an interesting experience recently. After publishing a few pieces of content around tech recruiting, a friend of mine reached out. She’s an actual recruiter, which is amazing for me because I don’t know what I’m doing. We’re still in conversations, but I realized something about teaming up. If you’re starting an initiative, who do you want on your team from square one, and who do you want to turn away? How do you find teammates and co-founders?
So, to start, why would I want a recruiter on my team? Because she’s got actual experience. I’ve got a tiny tech background, I can spin up websites and marketing campaigns quickly, but I have no idea how to recruit. After talking, we realized we had very similar ideas, and she offered her help. Who knows if it will go anywhere, but she would be an incredible ally because she has all the skills and network I lack. You want to pick teammates with relevant experience that you don’t have. If you’re starting a fishing tech company, you need someone that knows fishing, someone that knows tech, and someone that knows how to sell to fishermen.
So how do you find teammates? You post online in a few key places. Find relevant LinkedIn Groups, post on LinkedIn, google startup Slack groups online… But I’ve heard a shocking amount of cofounder recruiting done successfully through AngelList.
Vet them. Work with them on something smaller first. Don’t just jump into a full cofounder position hastily. Work relationships get insane super quickly. I’ve worked in small teams before, and the entire project goes down if someone doesn’t fully pull their weight.
That’s a lot of general information, but just be aware of the necessary skillsets, if they have what you lack, if you work well together, etc.
And if you can find someone with deep experience in the space you want to create in, reach out to them asking for help, and try to bring them on at least as a mentor.
